Reimagining the Forest Floor as Design, Care, and Recovery
Apart We Shall Perish is a multidisciplinary working group that uses the forest floor as a starting point for reimagining thinking, designing, and healing. The forest floor is not merely a biological layer, but a living fabric where slow transformation, decomposition, and regeneration coexist. It offers a model for design in which earthbound forces—its living richness, microbial memory, and biochemical labour—serve as agents of repair. These forces do not merely sustain life; they can also accelerate processes of recovery and catalyse renewal.
Diversity is a quiet foundation—a shelter—on which visible life rests. When this invisible web is depleted, the places around us are also weakened, along with their ability to sustain vitality. This microbiological diversity is essential not only for ecosystems but also for the immune resilience of both bodies and spaces. Apart We Shall Perish seeks to bring this invisible care back into the urban condition.
The name Apart We Shall Perish encapsulates our manifesto. We challenge the human self-image as separate from the rest of the living world and confront the illusion of autonomy. Art plays a vital role as a medium for breaking this isolation—bringing together diverse ways of knowing, sensing, and experiencing: scientific, poetic, embodied, and more-than-human. Through this convergence, we aim to shape environments that nurture ecological, psychological, and cultural renewal—fostering a culture of care.
We are engaged in broad collaboration with the University of Turku, the University of Helsinki, the University of Lapland, and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). Internationally, we work with partners in the United Kingdom, France, and Japan.
Over the course of four years, we will work in a temporary nursery within the Turku Botanical Garden—an experimental space that simultaneously serves as a design studio, a soil inoculation site, a platform for ecological study, and a place for tending to young plants. The surrounding old-growth oak forests offer a powerful reference for biodiversity and, in some cases, a source of native microorganisms. By 2029, the microforest will be established in its final location.

Apart We Shall Perish on työryhmä, joka tarkastelee metsänpohjaa uudenlaisen ajattelun, suunnittelun ja toipumisen lähtökohtana. Metsänpohja ei ole vain biologinen kerros, vaan elävä kudelma, jossa hidas muutos, hajottaminen ja uuden syntyminen tapahtuvat rinnakkain. Se tarjoaa mallin suunnittelulle, jossa luonto ja kulttuuri eivät asetu vastakkain, vaan lomittuvat huokoisesti – erityisesti kaupunkiympäristön ja metsän rajapinnoilla.
Keskeisin hankkeemme on mikrometsän toteuttaminen Turun uuden psykiatrisen sairaalan sisäpihalle. Mikrometsä on aistihuone ja toipumistila, mutta myös tilallinen kysymys siitä, miten voimme virittäytyä toisin ympäröivään maailmaan. Se perustuu ajatukseen, että todellinen muutos – kuten Guattarin kuvaama ekosofinen uudelleenjärjestäytyminen – ei synny pelkästään tiedosta tai kontrollista, vaan myös affekteista, aistimisesta ja suhteesta ei-käsitteelliseen. Tässä keskeiseksi nousee lumoutuminen: hetki, jossa ihminen herkistyy jollekin, joka ei ole hallittavissa, mutta silti syvästi merkityksellistä.
Lumoutuminen metsänpohjassa – kosteiden neulasten tuoksussa, sammaleen hengittävässä hiljaisuudessa, hajoavien lehtien rytmissä – voi toimia porttina toipumiselle. Se kutsuu viipymään, ei suorittamaan. Apart We Shall Perish pyrkii luomaan tiloja, joissa tällainen kokemus on mahdollinen: ei pakenemisena todellisuudesta, vaan yhteytenä siihen toisin. Tavoitteemme on kehittää suunnittelua, joka tunnistaa metsänpohjan logiikan – kerroksellisen, hitaan ja moniaistisen – ja tuo sen osaksi sekä mielen että kaupungin uudelleenvirittymistä.
